Ari & Victor Duo Celebrate Latin American Classical Music in Debut Album Laberintus

(Torrance, CA) July 10, 2019—Ari & Victor Duo will release their debut album, Laberintus: Soul of Latin America, on July 15, 2019, featuring works for cello and piano by Latin American composers or inspired by Latin American culture.

Laberintus is the first collaborative recording from cellist Aristides Rivas and pianist Victor Cayres, longtime friends who have received numerous accolades as individual performers. They have each appeared on some of the world’s most prestigious stages; in addition, Rivas is a Grammy Award nominee and has a TEDx talk about his El Sistema experience, while Cayres has appeared on multiple acclaimed albums.

The Duo reinvigorates the standard classical repertoire by shining the spotlight on Latin American culture, making this album a vital contribution that is deeply personal for the two artists, who hail originally from Venezuela and Brazil. Laberintus is infused with the stirring melodies and dance rhythms of Ginastera, Piazzolla, Villa-Lobos, and others. The album also features two world premieres: Piazzolaberintus by Paul Desenne and Merengue by Rivas, who takes on a dual role as performer and composer.

Listeners will be treated to the unique sound of one of four Lorenzo Storioni cellos left in the world, a rare 18th-century instrument from Cremona, Italy valued at 1.4 million USD and loaned to Rivas by Reuning & Son Violins. The performance is exquisitely rendered in Boston’s state-of-the-art Fraser Performance Studio at WGBH.

In the words of Ari & Victor Duo, “By releasing this album, we are hoping to elevate and advocate for the rich culture and traditions of our native South America, enrich the diversity of programming in the US and abroad, and also be an inspiration to young musicians and composers of Latino or South American background.”
